The Deer Hunter series began in 1997 with Deer Hunter: Interactive Hunting Experience and has spawned nearly a dozen related titles in the six years following its release. Deer Hunter 2003: Legendary Hunting brings many of the elements from the successful series together in an enhanced graphical package, while offering a host of new features including tutorials for utilizing new equipment (GPS, tree climbing stand and backpack), using the new calling system, and understanding realistic deer behavioral patterns.
The most notable new feature in Deer Hunter 2003 is the introduction of 20 skills in areas such as Sporting Arms, Calling, Tracking, and Stalking. Players can mold a virtual hunter by concentrating on specific skills, which raise overall rankings that can eventually result in a rating of Master Hunter. Other new features include the "create-a-gun" wizard for customizing guns and bows, several editors (Reticle, Projectile, Serious, and Serious SkaStudio) that provide tools for creating textures for weapons, terrain, environments, vehicles, and more, and a completely revamped multiplayer code that provides more stable online and offline gameplay.
Veterans of the series will be familiar with standard features such as the create-a-hunter option, multiple seasons, weather effects, time of day, time scales, and a range of diverse hunting areas. Buying tags (hunting licenses), equipment, and camouflage outfits, and choosing the correct mode of transportation (truck, snowmobile, ATV) are integral parts of the hunting experience in Deer Hunter 2003: Legendary Hunting. A "Hunt Now" option drops players into an area in close proximity to deer, with the difficulty settings determining the distance from the prey.
